Sixth edition Jazz Day stresses international character
Internationalization of the Jazz Day
“Last year we gave the Jazz Day an international injection, in collaboration with North Sea Round Town and the North Sea Jazz Festival. This year’s aim has been to expand on this. There was an increased international focus in the conference program, we invited a greater number of international professionals and there was the launch of Djazz.tv, the first and only television channel worldwide solely devoted to jazz. Hence we were very successful in our mission,” says Ikaros van Duppen, Jazz Day’s director.
Conference program aimed at opportunities
In spite of the negative developments in the sector, the conference program concentrated on new opportunities. The panels discussed new ways of financing and new media opportunities, now that new media partners have entered the jazz sector. The opportunities resulting from an effective use of new media were also on the roster. In addition to this the matchmaking program offered the possibility of making contact with national and international jazz professionals.
24 showcases on seven stages
The evening festival program was spread over seven stages at LantarenVenster, Hotel New York and the new location, Kantine Walhalla. With 24 showcases by both experienced and talented young jazz artists the festival offered an extensive and varied survey of jazz in the Netherlands. Some of the performing acts were: New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Amstel Big Band, Talking Cows, The Jazzinvaders, Maria Mendes Quintet, Bruut! and Floriaan Wempe Quartet. There was a memorable performance by the Willem Breuker Kollektief, concluding with Willem Breuker’s widow, Olga Zuiderhoek, offering the rights to his scores to publishing company Donemus.
